Nailed Down: The Truth about Roofing Shingle Warranties

Written by tbairstow on August 8th, 2008

When it comes to roofing, most homeowners don’t know their shingles from their elbows.  Roofers tout their “lifetime warranties” and 30 year guarantees.  It all sounds good, but the truth is that most roofs don’t last for even 20 years.  How is one to know what a roofing and shingle guarantee really means?  The Roofery did some research and came up with some surprising findings about roofing and shingle warranties.

You make some good points about the value of warranties. I think we must rely on the manufacturer for product quality, along with installer quality. As owner of My Handyman I also rely on my local suppliers to vet products as they get feedback from 100s of contractors. I’ve learned the value several times when products disappear as happened recently with Weatherbest. The company was sold and while the brand exists, it isn’t the same product.

Thanks for your pointer to The Roofery, as I read a few articles which are excellent.
